Celtic Music Workshops
Saturday, December 20 – Concrete Theatre
Celtic music takes center stage in Concrete on Saturday, December 20 with two free, hands-on workshops presented in collaboration with the Celtic Arts Foundation and sponsored by the Concrete Chamber of Commerce. No experience is required for either workshop, and all ages are welcome.
Try the Bagpipes: Demo & Lesson
12:00–2:00 pm – FREE
Step up to the Bagpipes for Beginners workshop and explore how these iconic instruments work and sound. Participants will get hands-on with a practice chanter, learn the bagpipe scale in a short mini-lesson, and feel the excitement of Scotland’s most famous instrument—no prior musical experience needed and instruments are provided.
Irish Singing Workshop with Hanz Araki
1:00–2:00 pm – FREE
Join Juno Award–winning Irish musician Hanz Araki for an afternoon of Celtic music at the Concrete Theatre. Considered one of the most talented Irish flute, whistle, and vocal artists in North America, Araki is known for his expressive playing and powerful interpretations of traditional songs.
Discover the living tradition of Irish song in this welcoming workshop suitable for all ages and experience levels. The session introduces sean nós, an unaccompanied style of Irish singing that emphasizes personal expression, storytelling, and freedom from strict rhythmic and harmonic rules.
Participants will explore phrasing, ornamentation, and approaches to learning songs by singing them, with opportunities to ask questions in a low-pressure, encouraging environment. Singing is encouraged but not required—listeners are warmly welcome, making this an ideal introduction for anyone curious about Celtic music but not ready for an all-instruments workshop.
